Choosing white tiles

Warm white versus cool white. Every white has an undertone. Warm whites lean cream, ivory or oat; cool whites lean blue, grey or pure paper-white. Hold the tile against your wall paint and benchtop in daylight — if it disappears, the undertones agree. If it looks dirty or starkly off, they don't.

Grout is the real design decision. With white tiles, grout colour does more work than the tile itself. White-on-white reads seamless and gallery-like. A soft grey grout grounds the tile and forgives lived-in wear. Charcoal grout turns subway into a graphic statement. Choose grout before you sign off on the tile.

Gloss versus matt. Gloss white amplifies light and suits small bathrooms, splashbacks and laundries where you want maximum reflection. Matt white reads more contemporary, hides watermarks and fingerprints, and sits better with natural materials like timber and linen.

Where white tiles genuinely shine. Small bathrooms, kitchen splashbacks, laundries and powder rooms — anywhere you want light to multiply rather than absorb. White is also the safest specification for resale.

Ordering & planning

The maintenance reality. White walls are easy. White floors are honest — they show grit, hair and tracked-in dirt the moment it lands. That's not a flaw; it's a prompt to clean. If you don't want the prompt, specify white on walls and a forgiving mid-tone underfoot.

Zellige and handmade whites. Zellige, hand-glazed and artisan whites are technically off-white — they carry pooling, shade variation and edge irregularity by design. Treat them as a category of their own; pairing them with a flat factory white usually flatters neither.

Large format white tiles. 600×1200 and slab-format whites give near-seamless walls and floors with minimal grout lines. The look is calm and architectural, but installation tolerances tighten significantly — specify an experienced tiler.

Always sample. The gap between a white tile on screen and a white tile in your kitchen at 6pm is wider than for any other colour. Order two or three candidates and live with them for a week before committing. Order samples →

White tile questions

Warm white or cool white?

Hold the sample against your wall paint and benchtop in daylight. If the undertones agree it disappears; if they fight it looks dirty or stark.

What grout colour with white tiles?

White-on-white for seamless; soft grey for forgiving daily use; charcoal for a graphic statement. Choose grout before committing to the tile.

Do white floor tiles show dirt?

Yes — quickly. Specify white for walls and splashbacks where cleaning is easy; use a mid-tone underfoot for lower maintenance.

Are zellige tiles really white?

They're off-white with tonal variation by design. Don't pair with flat factory white — the contrast makes both look wrong.

Best white tile for a small bathroom?

Gloss subway in vertical stack lifts the ceiling. Large format matt marble-look creates calm and space. Both work — choose based on the feeling you want.
